The Montague Arms
I host an eccentric variety show of art, music and comedy
on the second Thursday of each month in The Montague Arms.
One moment the audience are laughing along to a comedy routine, the next
they are hushed to silence for a performance art piece or poetry reading,
the next moment they are handed song sheets and asked to sing along with
a musician. Previous evenings have also seen pub quizzes with no right or
wrong answers, valentines cards being given to random strangers at the bar,
copulating ghosts spraying ectoplasm over the audience, masquerades, mediaeval
ceremonies and even a visit by Santa's sinister brother Uncle Christmas.
The evening takes places in The Montague Arms, which was described by the
London Paper as ‘The best pub in the country’ and was voted
number one pub by The Rough Pub Guide : A Celebration of the Great British
Boozer. Once you get in side it is easy to see why. Montague Arms is
a venue stuffed full of stuffed animals and other odd items collected over
its long history. The same family have run the pub for over forty years
and they can tell tales of east-end gangsters, blue comedians, punks, cockney
sing-along, prog rock, coach trips and dancing girls who weren’t what
they said they were. They also serve a decent pint of beer. You won’t
find atmosphere like this in many other places anymore.
